It's not the cheap Walmart bulbs either I've used everything from the cheap, bulk-buy incandescent to the $20/bulb LED's, and everything in between. By the way, our ceiling fixture in the living room (closest fixture to the breaker box), the bulbs don't just burn out I find the glass actually detached from the bulb base. All the voltage readings I got were within range (104-112v). I still have my old Fieldpiece DMM, so I went and checked power to a few sockets. However, I was an HVAC tech/ installer for a few years, so I know a little (enough to know I shouldn't be changing a bulb in the same socket every few weeks). Now, I'm no expert on residential electrical or lighting. The guy did his thing while I was at work, so I can't really attest to his competency. After whining about it to him over several months, he sent out an "electrician".

I've brought this to the attention of the landlord, but he seems to be ignoring this issue. Some bulbs are still good after 2 years, others have been replaced a dozen (no exaggeration) times. I went out to Walmart and stocked up on all the different bulbs for all the fixtures (flood, track, ceiling fan, etc.) In 1 fell swoop, I changed EVERY bulb in the house, thinking I'd be done with the issue for quite a while. I noticed a few months in that the bulbs started burning out. I've lived in our home for about 2 years (we're renting). Hi folks, I'm new to the forum and have a peculiar issue:

I would either exchange these fixtures for ones that have switches built in, and there are hundreds of those, or install a switch box and switch between the receptacle and the box for the sconce. You might be able to mount the switch in the canopy (wall plate) but even that would void the UL listing for the fixture. I don't see any way to do you have in mind, let alone safely. I can drill the appropriate size hole in the sconce and mount the switch so it looks like it came from the factory like that. My idea is to wire the sconces directly to the wall outlet below and add a rotary canopy switch so we will be able to switch the light on and off.

I want to add two wall sconces to our dining room wall.

I need guidance on adding a 2-wire rotary canopy switch to a wall sconce. Can any of the electrical experts on this forum verify this is feasible and safe? I have attached photos of the sconce, the switch and a diagram of how I think the wiring would be done. Is the diagram I have included the appropriate method to wire the switch in? I can drill the appropriate size hole in the sconce and mount the switch so it looks like it came from the factory like that.Ģ. The wall sconces do not have an on/off switch.

The nearest light switch is over 18' away and at this time I don't want to have to drill holes through the wall studs and patch the drywall. There is a wall outlet directly below in the same stud bay where we want them mounted.
